How can technology help NatureScot flexibly manage its understanding of the state of protected areas by making best use of available evidence?

NatureScot

The Challenge

If we are to support land and sea managers to make decisions that protect and restore Scotland’s Nature we need a better understanding of our natural environments which give us a holistic understanding of ecosystem health. This includes; ability to ingest various different types of data, in as close to real time as possible and the ability to present and analyse that data at different scales. We are looking for innovative proposals for technology solutions to support our national nature agency, NatureScot, to develop a world leading approach to monitoring the health of Protected Areas to support land and sea managers in decisions that help Scotland respond to the global biodiversity and climate emergencies.

Informed Solutions

The Solution

Our innovative Environmental Asset Management Platform provides a first-of-kind solution for intelligently monitoring environmental assets, enabling unification and analysis of a wide range of data sources, applying spatiotemporal intelligence and AI to provide actionable insights regarding ecosystem health, informing management decisions and enabling collaboration with stakeholders on the ground.

The Opportunity

Over 100 countries have signed the 30 by 30 framework, calling for 30 percent of global land and sea areas to be conserved by 2030. Meeting this target will require an estimated increase in expenditure to $177b globally, and we estimate a market for underpinning IT solutions to be >£10m.

Next Steps

We plan to take forward our work with NatureScot, rolling out the solution to enable use of new data sources, replacing legacy systems, and underpinning a longer-term transition to ecosystem health based monitoring. In parallel, we’re perusing opportunities with other environmental organisations in the UK and beyond.

The Team

Our joint team includes experts from NatureScot and Informed Solutions who are passionate about using innovative technology to respond to the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis.
